Peter Adams

Peter Webster Adams age 85, of Novelty, Ohio and Lost Tree Village, Florida, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on January 1, 2024. Beloved husband of 61 years to Anne Adams (nee Rounds); loving father of Michael Adams (Anna) and Lynne Winings (Timothy); cherished grandfather of Connor, Trevor, Kyle and Graham; and dear brother to David Adams (Bonnie).
Peter was born January 1, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio to Donald Croxton and Nancy Downer Adams. He attended Caledonia Elementary School and then University School where he graduated with high honors and as a member of both the Cadmean Society and The Edward Moore Society. While at University School Peter was a multi-year letter winner in soccer and baseball and the baseball team’s captain his senior year. He continued to play both sports in college. To his last days, Peter epitomized the school’s credo of Responsibility, Loyalty and Consideration and as a testament to his love of and commitment to the school, Peter was honored with its Graduate Alumni Award in 2000.
Upon his graduation from Yale University armed with a history degree, Peter returned to Cleveland and embarked on a 50-year investment career starting at National City Bank and then at Alexander Van Cleef & Wood. Together with his business partner and life-long friend they went on to merge their business in 1975 with Alliance Capital where Peter would remain as Senior Vice President for the next 30 years. He maintained close ties with his Alliance and Van Cleef “families” long after his retirement.
Peter had many passions including traveling the world with Anne, playing golf at Mayfield Country Club, The Pepper Pike Club, and Lost Tree with great friends and family and following the travails of the Cleveland sports teams. Undoubtedly, his biggest passion was watching his four grandsons grow into young men from the soccer fields, to college and most recently into early professional careers. “Poppie” will continue to be a guiding light for them, the family and undoubtedly many others. He was truly a friend to all.
Peter’s many contributions to business and philanthropy were characterized by respect, integrity, humor and a warm and generous heart. He devoted considerable energy and indelible leadership to numerous boards including University School, Lost Tree Village Charitable Foundation, Lake View Cemetery, University Hospitals and the Cleveland Sight Center.
Most enthusiastically, Peter served as President of The John Huntington Fund for Education for 43 years, providing scholarships to promising STEM students in Cuyahoga County. Throughout his life, Peter was a tireless champion for young people to have the fullest opportunity to develop their talents through education and to learn to share their gifts with others.
In lieu of flowers, Peter’s family invites contributions in his memory to The John Huntington Fund for Education, 3201 Enterprise Pkwy, Suite 140, Cleveland, OH 44122 or University School, 2785 SOM Center Road, Hunting Valley, OH 44022 or online at
