Joseph Francis Savage, III

Joseph Francis “Jeff” Savage, III, who radiated warmth and good humor, passed away on January 11th in Waterbury, CT.

Jeff was born in 1940 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph Francis Savage, Jr and Mary Agnes Flaherty, and spent his childhood in Bay Shore, NY. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1957 and from Yale University in 1961. He then pursued a law degree at the University of Virginia, where he helped found the Virginia Rugby Football Club.

He went to work in New York City as an attorney at Cadawaler, Wickerhsam and Taft and in-house counsel at Bristol-Myers. He then held a series of positions as a lawyer and investment banker, living in Atlanta, GA; Augusta, GA; Philadelphia, PA and Hartford, CT along the way. In 1993, he began a new career chapter in the antiques business, and began acting in local theaters, a hobby that would turn into a passion.

His first marriage to Barbara Davidson, and second marriage to Elizabeth Oberschall, ended in divorce. He leaves two children from each of those marriages — Elizabeth Blair Marotto (Robert P.) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, John Davidson Savage (Cynthia) of Greenwich, CT, Joseph Francis “Jason” Savage IV (Lisa) of Montclair, NJ and Edmund Todd Savage (Missy) of West Palm Beach, FL.

In 2002 he met Elizabeth “Hitchy” Rahily. and they began a loving relationship which would last until his death. It was easy consensus that they brought out the very best in one another, and those who knew Jeff were certain that this period of his life was his happiest. He was honored to be a close friend to Hitchy’s children and siblings, and was adored by Hitchy’s grandson.

Jeff is survived by his four children, Hitchy, a brother Peter Savage (Ninky) of Duxbury, MA and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and his younger sisters Anne Doyle “Anndee” Savage and Ellen Savage.

He also leaves behind a close-knit family of community theater actors and directors throughout Northwestern Connecticut, with whom he worked on countless plays and musicals.
