Jim was decisive, loyal, and capable of mad-cap humor. When Jim chose you as his friend, the decision was final and enduring. When Jim found the first woman he loved, Nancy Lord (to whom my wife Vida and I introduced him in 1963), the romance blossomed and led to a festive wedding in Northern California. His loyalty to her never wavered until her untimely death. He was devastated.
His banking career took him, Nancy, and their adored children, James and Nancy, to centers of finance throughout Latin America. He returned to California, remarried, but soon succumbed to cancer, as well.
No one was readier with humor, or more appreciative of it, than Jim. He was a great boon to my life, at Yale and in later life in California. I still miss his infectious personality.
