James Allen Carney, Jr. of McLean, VA., died November 7, 2018 after a brief illness. A native of Norfolk, VA., Jim, who was known as Allen to his immediate family, was born on July 15, 1938, and was the son of James Allen and Frances Ferguson Carney. He was a proud 1956 alumnus of the Lawrenceville School, spent a year at Stowe School, in Buckinghamshire, England, and was graduated from Yale University in 1961. After a stint as a reporter for the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, he entered the Foreign Service with posts in Bremen, Germany, and at State Department headquarters in Washington, DC.
He left the State Department in 1966 to form Behavioral Management Inc., a consulting company in the field of organizational development that served a wide range of clients in the United States and Africa, Asia, and South and Central America. Over his career, he made many deep and lasting friendships and developed a love of birds, wildlife, travel, and adventure that he pursued throughout his career and after his retirement in 2005.
Jim’s marriage to his first wife, the late Linda Dryden, ended in divorce. His second wife, Paula Carney, died in 2013. He is survived by three children by his first wife: Elizabeth Carney (Paul) of Medford, MA, Jay Carney (Claire) of Washington, DC, and Bruce Carney (Kristen) of Wakefield, MA; two sisters, Jane Scully (Malcolm) of Falls Church, VA, and Frances Taylor of Lincoln, VA; six grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his dear friend and traveling companion, Gloria Sakamoto, of Lima, Peru.
A funeral service will be held December 8, 2018 at 11 a.m., Money & King Vienna Funeral Home,171 West Maple Avenue, Vienna, VA. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the National Wildlife Fund, nwf.org, would be appreciated.
