After Yale, Charlie attended Yale Law School – Class of ’64 – and then moved to New York City and worked for Chase Manhattan Bank. He met his bride, Constance Emery Kellogg, while working in New York and they married in 1968.
Their first daughter, Prentiss Weatherby Vallender, was born in New York in 1970, and soon thereafter they moved to Wilton, Connecticut where Charlie practiced law. Their second daughter, Perrin Kellogg Vallender, was born in 1972. In 1973, the family moved to Washington, DC where Charlie took a position with West Publishing Company. He worked at West Publishing for 25 years. He was also an avid tennis player and enjoyed being outdoors, especially near the ocean.
In 1982, he lost his beloved wife to cancer. Charlie raised his daughters on his own, and they were his pride and joy. He felt their education was critically important. Prentiss and Perrin both attended The Potomac School in McLean, Virginia, St. Mark’s School, and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Prentiss married Mark Lay in 1998 and they have two children: Caroline and Andrew. Perrin married Max Keeler in 2001 and they also have two children: Henry and Charlotte. Prentiss and Perrin still live in the Washington, DC area with their families.
Charlie died suddenly in the fall of 2001, soon after his second daughter was married but, sadly, before his first grandchild was born.
